Bible Study- Gospel According to Luke- Chpt 8: 22-56 Miracles and Faith

Welcome back to our podcast series on the Gospel According to Luke. My name is Ryan and I am a Bible Nerd! Today, we're diving into Chapter 8, picking up where we left off at verse 22. I’ll be reading from the Christian Standard Bible (CSB), but feel free to follow along with whatever translation you prefer. Whether you’re using the NIV, KJV, or a mobile app, it’s great to nerd out together as we immerse ourselves in God's Word!

Recap of Chapter 8

In the previous parts of Chapter 8, we explored the Parable of the Sower and its profound insights on how the Word can illuminate our lives. As we read, we learn that the more we engage with Scripture, the more our light shines in the world. As we prepare to continue our journey through this chapter, we encounter some remarkable stories that showcase Jesus' miracles—calming storms, freeing the tormented, healing by faith, and raising the dead.

Jesus Calms the Storm

Let's jump right into the text starting with verse 22.

"One day he and his disciples got into a boat, and he told them, 'Let's cross over to the other side of the lake.' So they set out. As they were sailing, he fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm came down on the lake, and they were being swamped and were in danger."

Here we find the disciples—experienced fishermen—facing a storm so fierce it frightens them. Their panic is a testament to the storm's intensity. When they wake Jesus, He rebukes the wind and waves, and calm follows.

"Where is your faith?" He asks them after an incredible display of His authority. The disciples are left in awe, asking, "Who then is this? He commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey Him."

This moment challenges our understanding of divine power. Unlike the pagan deities of their time, Jesus’ control over nature reveals His greater identity as God incarnate.

The Healing of the Demon-Possessed Man

Moving forward, we see Jesus and His disciples arrive in the region of the Gerasenes.

"A demon-possessed man from the town met him. For a long time, he had worn no clothes and did not stay in a house but in the tombs."

This man, tormented by demons, represents the depths of despair. When Jesus confronts him, the demons respond fearfully, acknowledging Jesus' authority.

"Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' 'Legion,' he said, because many demons had entered him."

When the demons plead to be sent into a herd of pigs, Jesus allows it, leading to the pigs’ drowning in the lake—a curious yet powerful moment.

The reaction of the townspeople is striking. Instead of celebrating the man’s liberation, they ask Jesus to leave, gripped by fear and concern over the economic fallout of the pigs.

"Go back to your home and tell all that God has done for you," Jesus instructs the healed man, who then shares his miraculous story throughout the town.

This illustrates the transformative power of faith and the importance of sharing our experiences with Christ.

The Miracle of Jairus’ Daughter and the Woman with the Bleeding Disorder

As we continue, we encounter a synagogue leader named Jairus, whose only daughter is dying.

"While he was going, the crowds were nearly crushing him. A woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years came up behind him and touched the edge of his robe."

The woman’s faith is profound—she believes that just touching Jesus' garment will heal her.

"Daughter, he said to her, 'Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.'"

In a cultural climate that viewed her as unclean, her faith and subsequent healing restores not only her health but her place in society.

Meanwhile, news arrives that Jairus’ daughter has died, but Jesus reassures him:

"Don't be afraid; only believe, and she will be saved."

Upon reaching Jairus’ home, Jesus boldly tells the mourners that the girl is not dead but merely asleep.

"Child, get up," He calls, and her spirit returns.

This powerful moment affirms Jesus’ authority over life and death, leaving her parents astonished.

About Me

Bible N3rd Pic.jpg

I started the fullness of my walk with Christ in 2019.  I can't believe how much it has changed my life and still how far I want to go.  I was never a "reader" but some chains fell off my life and I have spent so much of my time studying and learning.  It got to the point where I wanted to engage and share what I have made into a passion.  That is where this all started and I can't wait to see where God takes it!
