Hey everyone, Ryan here! I’m excited to welcome you back to our series on the Gospel according to Luke. Today, we’re diving into Chapter 5. I’ll be reading from the New King James Version, but feel free to follow along in whichever translation you prefer. Let’s get started with verse 1.

As the multitude pressed around Him to hear the Word of God, Jesus stood by the Lake of Gennesaret and noticed two boats by the shore. The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. Then He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.

After He finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon responded, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing. Nevertheless, at Your word, I will let down the net.” This moment is incredible. They had been fishing all night—the optimal time to catch fish—but at this point in the day, catching anything seemed unlikely.

However, when they followed His instructions, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. They called their partners in the other boat for help, and soon both boats were filled, almost sinking! Here we witness a powerful miracle. Peter’s reaction, falling at Jesus’ knees and declaring, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord,” underscores an important theme: encountering the divine often brings an awareness of our own unworthiness.

The astonishment of Peter and his partners—James and John—reveals the magnitude of the miracle. Jesus reassured Simon, saying, “Do not be afraid. From now on, you will catch men.” This signifies Peter’s calling to become a disciple and a fisher of men, connecting to his later mission of spreading the Gospel.

Let’s continue to verse 12. In a certain city, a man full of leprosy approached Jesus, fell on his face, and implored Him, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Jesus reached out, touched him, and said, “I am willing; be cleansed.” The leprosy left immediately. Jesus instructed the man not to tell anyone but to present himself to the priest as a testimony, following the Mosaic command.

As news of Jesus spread, great multitudes gathered to hear Him and be healed. Amidst this, Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness to pray, demonstrating the importance of spiritual replenishment even amidst busy ministry.

In verses 17-26, the narrative continues with another profound miracle. Certain men brought a paralyzed man on a bed to Jesus but couldn't get through the crowd. They climbed onto the roof and lowered him down. When Jesus saw their faith, He said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” This declaration sparked criticism from the scribes and Pharisees, who wondered how Jesus could forgive sins, emphasizing that only God can do so.

Jesus then asked them, “Which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven’ or ‘Rise up and walk?’” To demonstrate His authority, He told the paralyzed man to rise, take up his bed, and go home. Miraculously, the man did just that, glorifying God.

Next, we meet Levi, a tax collector, who left everything to follow Jesus after being called. Levi then hosted a feast for Jesus, which led to criticism from the Pharisees regarding Jesus associating with tax collectors and sinners. In response, Jesus stated, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Jesus also addressed the question of fasting, explaining that His presence was a time of celebration, indicating that fasting would come later when He was no longer physically with them.

Jesus concludes this chapter with parables about new wine and old wineskins, emphasizing that His teachings require a fresh understanding and an openness to new revelations.

As we wrap up, I hope you enjoyed this exploration of Luke Chapter 5. Your feedback is invaluable, so let me know your thoughts on what resonated with you, and how I can improve. Don’t forget to subscribe, like, share, and comment as we continue this journey together.

About Me

Bible N3rd Pic.jpg

I started the fullness of my walk with Christ in 2019.  I can't believe how much it has changed my life and still how far I want to go.  I was never a "reader" but some chains fell off my life and I have spent so much of my time studying and learning.  It got to the point where I wanted to engage and share what I have made into a passion.  That is where this all started and I can't wait to see where God takes it!
