Bible Study- Gospel According to Luke- Chpt 4: 31-44 Jesus' Drives out Impure Spirits

Hey everyone, Ryan here! I’m a Bible nerd. We contiue our study through the Gospel according to Luke. Today lets focus in on Chapter 4, starting at verse 31.

To recap our previous discussion, we examined Jesus entering the synagogue and reading from the Scroll of Isaiah and what we call Chapter 61. His message was so profound that it offended some of the people to the point where they intended to throw Him off a cliff. However, He miraculously passed through the crowd unharmed.

Now, we continue the story as Luke presents more of the miracles that Jesus performed, emphasizing that He is not just another god among the pantheon but rather the one true God—Yahweh—in human form. Let’s read together, starting in Luke 4:31. I’ll be reading from the New King James Version (NKJV), but feel free to follow along in your preferred translation.

“Then He [Jesus] went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.” In the synagogue, a man possessed by an unclean spirit cried out, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet and come out of him!” When the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him without harming him. The people were amazed and asked one another, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” News about Him spread throughout the surrounding region.

The miraculous happenings recorded in this chapter echo similar accounts in Mark Chapter 1. Luke meticulously presents these events to confirm their authenticity and demonstrate the true nature of Jesus’ authority.

As we progress to verse 38, we read, “He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon's house.” This refers to Simon Peter, who would later be known as Peter. In Simon's house, Jesus learned that Peter's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her. “So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately, she arose and served them.”

This miraculous healing is wonderfully depicted in “The Chosen,” a series that brings these biblical moments to life. The portrayal of Peter's mother-in-law suddenly popping up to serve after being healed brings a lighthearted touch to the narrative. It’s enjoyable to see how these scenes are visualized, along with the accompanying music that adds to the moment.

Continuing in Chapter 4, when the sun had set, many who were sick with various diseases were brought to Jesus, and He laid His hands on everyone and healed them. The demons also came out of many, crying out, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” However, He rebuked them, not allowing them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.

In verse 42, we see that “when it was day, He departed and went to a deserted place.” The crowd sought Him and tried to keep Him from leaving. But Jesus told them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

That brings us to the end of Chapter 4. I hope you’re enjoying this series as we read through the Gospel according to Luke. Your feedback and comments mean a lot to me, and I truly enjoy preparing for these discussions.

As we close, may you find inspiration and insight in your own journey through Scripture. May God's peace fill your day. In Jesus' name, I look forward to seeing you next time!

About Me

Bible N3rd Pic.jpg

I started the fullness of my walk with Christ in 2019.  I can't believe how much it has changed my life and still how far I want to go.  I was never a "reader" but some chains fell off my life and I have spent so much of my time studying and learning.  It got to the point where I wanted to engage and share what I have made into a passion.  That is where this all started and I can't wait to see where God takes it!
