A Tale of Two Temples
A Tale of Two Temples

Welcome back to our study of Acts. Last week, we explored the arrival of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the early church. This week, we dive into Chapters 3 through 5, a section I like to call "A Tale of Two Temples."

On one hand, we have the Jerusalem Temple. A magnificent physical structure. I had the opportunity to visit the Temple Mount and it's truly amazing. On the other, we see the emerging "Temple of the Holy Spirit" within the believers themselves. As we walk through these chapters, notice the tension between these two worlds.

The Power of Looking Up (Acts 3)

In Acts 3, Peter and John encounter a man lame from birth at the temple gate. Peter’s first words to him were simple yet profound: "Look at us." (Acts 3:4 ESV) The man was likely looking down in shame or expectation of a mere coin. But when he looked up, filled with the Holy Spirit, he received far more than silver or gold! He received healing!

Peter used this miracle to proclaim Jesus as the "Holy and Righteous One" and the "Author of Life." To the Jewish hearers, these titles were a direct claim of Jesus’ divinity. His message was clear: repent and turn back, so that your sins may be blotted out and times of refreshing may come.

Boldness in the Face of Rejection (Acts 4)

Success often brings opposition. Peter and John are arrested and questioned by the high priestly family: "By what power or by what name did you do this?" (Acts 4:7 ESV) Peter, quoting Psalm 118:22, identifies Jesus as the stone the builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone. Even though the leaders saw the apostles as uneducated and common men, they could not deny the courage born from being in Christ.

Discerning Obedience

This chapter presents a timeless challenge: How do we discern when to obey earthly authorities and when to prioritize God's commands? Peter and John’s answer was simple: they could not help but speak of what they had seen and heard.

The Anatomy of Integrity (Acts 5)

The early church was known for radical generosity, exemplified by Barnabas (Joseph the Levite), whose name means "Son of Encouragement." We will continue to learn more about this incredible man through Acts. He sold his land and gave everything to the apostles at the end of Chapter 4. However, Chapter 5 introduces a dark contrast: Ananias and Sapphira.

Their sin wasn't keeping some of the money; it was the lie that they had given all. They sought the reputation of sacrifice without the reality of it. Peter’s warning is sobering: they didn't just lie to men, but to the Holy Spirit. This serves as a powerful reminder that the enemy loves to take holy things and corrupt them with

pride and ego.

The Voice of Reason: Gamaliel

As the apostles continued to perform signs and wonders, they were imprisoned again, only to be freed by an angel and sent right back to the temple to preach. When the council wanted to put them to death, a respected Pharisee named Gamaliel (the same teacher who trained Paul) offered wise counsel: "So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or undertaking is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!" (Acts 5: 38-39 ESV)

Reflection Questions: Where have you witnessed God’s intervention in your own life recently? How does that story change the way you share your faith with others?

Looking Ahead: From Boldness to Breakthrough

As we wrap up our look at Chapters 3 through 5, we see a church that is growing in both power and purity. They have navigated the excitement of miracles and the sobering reality of internal integrity. But as any student of history knows, great light often draws great opposition.

In our next study, we will cover Chapters 6-8:3, Week 3: Faith under Fire, we will see this tension reach a breaking point. We will meet Stephen, a man "full of the Spirit and wisdom," who becomes the first to pay the ultimate price for his testimony. His story reminds us that even when we face setbacks or adversity, God’s providence is often at work behind the scenes, using those very moments to scatter the seeds of the Gospel to the ends of the earth.

Join me next time as we dive into Acts 6-8 and witness how a moment of great sacrifice sparked a global movement.

About Me

Bible N3rd Pic.jpg

I started the fullness of my walk with Christ in 2019.  I can't believe how much it has changed my life and still how far I want to go.  I was never a "reader" but some chains fell off my life and I have spent so much of my time studying and learning.  It got to the point where I wanted to engage and share what I have made into a passion.  That is where this all started and I can't wait to see where God takes it!
