If you could sit down with one book (outside of the Bible) that has the power to completely reshape how you view right and wrong, the universe, the Trinity, and your own hidden character, what would it be?
For myself and millions of people over the last eighty years, that book is Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis.
Originally delivered as a series of live radio broadcasts during the dark, bomb-sheltered days of World War II, Lewis’s words were meant to provide a war-torn world with an anchor. He wasn't interested in defending specific church politics or denominational turf wars. He wanted to look at the bedrock. He wanted to uncover the common-ground faith shared by historic Christians since the very beginning, what he famously termed "mere" Christianity.
Over the next ten weeks, we are launching a comprehensive, week-by-week blog series breaking down this masterpiece. Whether you are a lifelong believer looking to sharpen your theology, a skeptic wrestling with the concept of God, or someone running a small group study of your own, this series is designed for you.
What is Mere Christianity by CS Lewis About?
We live in a culture that is deeply divided, loud, and often spiritually exhausted. We argue constantly about justice, morality, and human rights, yet we rarely stop to ask: Where do these standards actually come from?
Lewis doesn't start with floating theological theories. He starts on the sidewalk. He starts with why human beings argue, why we make excuses when we get caught being selfish, and why our internal moral "compass" points the way it does. From there, he systematically builds a bulletproof map that leads straight to the heart of a Three-Personal God who wants to completely transform our nature.
