Can I Trust the Bible? Digging Up the Truth with Biblical Archaeology

Can I trust the Bible?

So far in this series, we’ve learned that the Bible is divinely inspired, preserved by an overwhelming mountain of manuscript evidence, and carefully compiled into a trustworthy canon of scripture.

But this brings us to a massive practical test. The Bible isn't just a book of abstract poetry or philosophy. It is a book deeply rooted in real human history. It names specific kings, describes specific battles, and lists exact geographical cities, pools, and walls.

This means the Bible puts its neck on the line. If it’s just a book of invented religious myths, then its history should fall apart the moment we start digging into the dirt. Skeptics used to claim exactly that! Arguing that major biblical figures like King David or Pontius Pilate were completely fictional characters invented by later writers.

Biblical Archaeology

But over the last century, spade after spade has turned up the dirt in the Middle East, and the science of biblical archaeology has left the skeptics with very few places to hide. Let’s look at three incredible discoveries where archaeology dug up the exact truth of the Bible:

1. Smashed Doubts: The Tel Dan Stele and King David

For decades, modern critical scholars claimed that King David was nothing more than a legendary figure, the Israeli equivalent of King Arthur. They argued that there was absolutely zero historical proof outside of the Bible that David ever existed.

That all changed in 1993 at an archaeological dig site in northern Israel called Tel Dan.

Archaeologists discovered a broken triumphal stone slab (a stele) written by an ancient Aramean king boasting of his victory over Israel. Written in the stone, dating back to the 9th century BC (just a few generations after David lived), was a phrase that shocked the academic world: "House of David."

For the first time, a secular enemy of ancient Israel confirmed exactly what the Bible said: David wasn't a myth. He was a real king who established a real royal dynasty.

2. Written in Stone: The Pilate Inscription

The New Testament faces the exact same historical scrutiny. For a long time, skeptics questioned the existence of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who sentenced Jesus to the cross. Because Roman records didn't mention him prominently, critics claimed he was a fictional villain cooked up by the early church.

Then came 1961 in the ancient coastal city of Caesarea Maritima.

While excavating a Roman theater, archaeologists flipped over a limestone block used as a step and found a Latin inscription carved right into it. The stone explicitly bore the name: "Pontius Pilate, Prefect of Judea."

Once again, physical history vindicated the Gospels. Pilate wasn't a literary device; he was the exact man sitting in the exact seat of power the Bible said he was.

3. Bypassing Myths: The Pool of Siloam

In John 9, Jesus encounters a man blind from birth. He heals him by spitting on the ground, making mud, and telling the man to go wash in the Pool of Siloam.

For centuries, because the location of the pool was lost to time, critics claimed John’s Gospel was writing theological allegory rather than eyewitness history. But in 2004, utility workers repairing a water pipe southeast of Jerusalem's Old City accidentally struck giant stone steps.

Archaeologists rushed to the scene and uncovered the massive, monumental first-century Pool of Siloam—exactly where the Gospel of John implied it should be. The steps Jesus' disciples walked on were real. The water was real. The history was real.

What Biblical Archaeology Tells Us About Your Bible

Let's be completely clear about one thing: archaeology cannot prove that Jesus rose from the dead or that your sins are forgiven. Those are truths received by faith.

But what biblical archaeology does do is prove that the historical framework of the Bible is incredibly accurate. The Bible doesn't say, "Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away..." It says, "In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar..." (Luke 3:1).

When a book is consistently proven right about the things you can verify—like cities, rulers, coins, and inscriptions—it gives you massive, rational confidence to trust what it says about the things you can't physically verify, like the state of your soul and the hope of eternity. Your Bible is not a book of fairy tales. It is a book of truth anchored in solid stone.

What’s Coming Next...

Now that we have proven the Bible is inspired, historically accurate, and preserved through the ages, it leaves us with one final, crucial step: How do we move this Book from a historical artifact on our shelves into a living authority over our daily choices? Next week, we are closing out this series by looking at how to let a trustworthy Book transform your daily life. You won't want to miss our big finale!

In the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts on today’s post. Have you ever seen photos of these discoveries? Head over to social media and look up @BibleN3rd on your favorite platform—let's keep this conversation rolling!

As you go about your week, may the Lord bless you and keep you; may He make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.
