Deepening Our Faith in the Shadow of the Cross

Luke 22 is a powerful chapter packed with pivotal moments in Jesus’ earthly ministry—His institutions of the Lord’s Supper, His prayer in Gethsemane, His arrest, Peter’s denial, and teachings on faithfulness and readiness. As we reflect on these events, we're reminded of His sovereignty, His heart for obedience, and the importance of preparing ourselves for His return.

Let’s walk through Luke 22 and draw lessons to strengthen our faith journey.

The Plot to Kill Jesus (Verses 1-6)

The chapter opens with a plot brewing among the religious leaders. They’re determined to kill Jesus because His influence threatens their power. Judas Iscariot approaches these leaders, offering to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver—a stark example of greed leading to betrayal.

Lesson: Greed or the love of worldly gain can blind us to God’s purpose. Judas’ betrayal is a tragic reminder that our priorities need to be aligned with God's call, not material or selfish ambitions.

Jesus Prepares the Passover (Verses 7-13)

Jesus sends Peter and John ahead to prepare the Passover meal, knowing His hour has come. This detailed instruction underscores His divine foreknowledge and sovereignty. Everything is unfolding according to God's perfect plan.

Lesson: God is sovereign over all situations—trust His timing and leading. No detail is too small for His care and orchestration.

The Institution of the Lord’s Supper (Verses 14-23)

During the meal, Jesus takes bread, breaks it, and says, “This is my body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” He then takes the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” (Luke 22:19-20)

This moment is foundational—Christ’s sacrifice becomes the new covenant, uniting believers with Him. He also predicts His betrayal: “The hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.” (v. 21)

Lesson: The remembrance of this pivotal event is observed in many ways throughout Christendom, but Christ’s sacrifice is at the core of our faith. Participating in communion is a reminder of His love and the new relationship we have with God through His blood.

Jesus Warns of Denial and Calls to Faithfulness (Verses 24-34)

The disciples argue over who is the greatest—a reflection of their human pride. Jesus teaches humility: “The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.” (v. 26)

He then predicts Peter’s denial, emphasizing spiritual resilience. Satan has asked permission to sift Peter like wheat, but Jesus has prayed for him—highlighting the importance of prayer and faith during trials.

Lesson: Humility and service are the hallmarks of true leadership. Also, expect challenges—faith is tested not in comfort, but in times of trial. Prayer is essential to stand firm.

Preparing for Challenges (Verses 35-38)

Jesus reminds His disciples of times when they depended on themselves—selling possessions, relying on their own strength. He urges them to buy a sword if they don’t have one, symbolizing readiness and spiritual preparedness.

Note: This isn’t a call to violence but an acknowledgment that spiritual warfare requires us to be vigilant and equipped with faith and prayer.

Lesson: Stay spiritually prepared—daily prayer, reading Scripture, and trusting God’s strength are vital in facing life’s battles.

Praying in Gethsemane (Verses 39-46)

Jesus retreats to Gethsemane, a place of prayer, knowing what’s ahead. His prayer expresses his human vulnerability and trust in the Father’s will: “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done.” (v. 42)

An angel strengthens Him, and He prays earnestly until His sweat becomes like great drops of blood—a reminder of our need for persistent prayer during times of crisis.

Lesson: In our most challenging moments, imitate Jesus—trust in God’s plan, seek strength through prayer, and surrender to His will.

Closing Reflection

Luke 22 challenges us on multiple levels:

  • Trust in God's sovereignty: Every detail is part of His divine plan.

  • Humility and service: True greatness in His kingdom is about serving others, not elevating ourselves.

  • Prayer and perseverance: Enduring through trials requires ongoing, fervent prayer.

  • Preparation: Stay spiritually alert and ready for what lies ahead.

Practical Steps for Today

  • Examine your priorities: Are you trusting God completely, or are material possessions and worldly concerns holding you back? Remember Romans 8:5

  • Develop a prayer routine: Reflect Jesus’ example; pray earnestly, seeking God’s strength when facing difficulties.

  • Practice humility: Serve others selflessly, not for recognition but out of love and obedience to Christ.

  • Stay spiritually prepared: Engage daily with Scripture and prayer to stand firm during life’s challenges and await His return with readiness.

Conclusion

Thank you for joining me as we explored Luke 22. These moments demonstrate that following Jesus requires intentionality, humility, and perseverance. His example in prayer and service calls us to deepen our trust in God and stay committed in times of difficulty.

About Me

Bible N3rd Pic.jpg

I started the fullness of my walk with Christ in 2019.  I can't believe how much it has changed my life and still how far I want to go.  I was never a "reader" but some chains fell off my life and I have spent so much of my time studying and learning.  It got to the point where I wanted to engage and share what I have made into a passion.  That is where this all started and I can't wait to see where God takes it!
