Hello everyone! I'm Ryan, your Bible nerd, and we are continuing our study though the Gospel according to Luke. We are diving into Luke 22: 39-70—an intimate glimpse into some of the most profound and intense moments leading up to Jesus's crucifixion.

Walking Through the Passages

This section captures Jesus’s Garden of Gethsemane experience, His betrayal by Judas, Peter’s denial, and the beginning of His trial before the religious leaders. These passages are packed with lessons about obedience, resilience, humility, and unwavering faith—even amid incredible suffering.

Jesus’s Honest Prayer (Luke 22: 39-46)

After the Last Supper, Jesus goes to the Mount of Olives, knowing what lies ahead. His prayer is raw and heartfelt: "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet not my will but yours be done." This moment reveals Jesus's humanity—His real struggle with the weight of upcoming suffering. Yet, He trusts fully in God's plan.

An angel appears to strengthen Him, and His sweat becomes like drops of blood—a powerful image of deep emotional and spiritual anguish. This level of intensity is hard to fully grasp, especially considering the brutality Jesus knew He was about to face. Historical accounts tell us how Roman soldiers were expert torturers, and the rawness of Jesus’s suffering reminds us of the immense love that held Him on that cross.

The statement, "It wasn’t the nails that held Him there, but His love," profoundly underscores the depth of His sacrifice. Even though He had the power to call angels and stop everything, His submission shows us the true meaning of obedience.

Betrayal and Denial (Luke 22:47-62)

Judas’s betrayal with a kiss—an act cloaked in friendship—shatters the calm, revealing treachery at its worst. Jesus’s question, "Who do you seek?" demonstrates His control and willingness to surrender for our salvation.

Peter’s faltering comes next. His confident stance crumbles as he follows Jesus at a distance. When confronted, Peter denies knowing Jesus three times, heartbreaking words that lead him to weep bitterly—showing our human tendency to falter, even in the most pivotal moments. Yet, Jesus’s knowledge of Peter’s weakness reveals His boundless mercy and readiness to forgive.

The Mockery and Jesus’s Identity (Luke 22:63-70)

The Jewish leaders mock Jesus, blindfolding Him and striking Him, demanding He prophesy—another act of rejection. Then, they question His identity: "Are you the Messiah?" Jesus’s calm reply, "You say that I am," affirms who He is—His unwavering truth in the face of opposition.

This scene challenges us: even when facing hostility or persecution, standing firm in our faith and identity in Christ is vital. Jesus’s courage under pressure bolsters our own resolve.

Lessons for Today

From these powerful moments, what can we take away?

  • Honest Prayer: Just as Jesus poured out His heart to the Father, we are called to be honest in prayer—sharing our struggles, fears, and hopes. Trust that God's plan is better, even when it’s hard.

  • Weakness and Grace: Even the strongest believers, like Peter, stumble. That’s why we need God's grace daily. When we falter, His love remains, ready to restore and forgive.

  • Identity in Christ: Knowing who we are in Him gives us strength—and courage—when faced with opposition or ridicule.

  • Humility and Trust: In challenging circumstances, humility allows us to trust God's purpose and timing, embracing the spiritual growth found in delays and difficulties.

Living Out These Lessons

How do we incorporate these truths into our daily lives? Here are some practical steps:

  1. Spend time in honest prayer—speak to God openly about your fears and struggles, trusting Him with your heart.

  2. Recognize your weaknesses and lean into God's grace; remember, stumbling isn’t the end—repentance leads to restoration.

  3. Stand firm in your identity as a child of God, especially during opposition.

  4. Practice humility by trusting God's purpose even when circumstances are difficult.

About Me

Bible N3rd Pic.jpg

I started the fullness of my walk with Christ in 2019.  I can't believe how much it has changed my life and still how far I want to go.  I was never a "reader" but some chains fell off my life and I have spent so much of my time studying and learning.  It got to the point where I wanted to engage and share what I have made into a passion.  That is where this all started and I can't wait to see where God takes it!
