Bible Study- Gospel According to Luke Chpt 9: 1-36 Feeding the 5000 and Transfiguration

Hello, Bible enthusiasts! Ryan here, fellow Bible Nerd, and welcome back to our podcast series on the Gospel according to Luke. Today, we dive into an action-packed Chapter 9, where we witness Jesus sending out the 12 disciples, performing the miracle of feeding 5,000 people, as well as Peter's profound confession of faith. Additionally, we’ll touch on Jesus foretelling his death and the Transfiguration.

Let's unpack verse 1-36!

The Sending of the Disciples

We begin in verse 1, where Jesus calls the 12 disciples together and gives them the power and authority to heal the sick and cast out demons. He instructs them to take nothing for their journey—no staff, bag, or even money. Jesus emphasizes the importance of reliance on God and the message they are carrying. If a town does not welcome them, they are to shake the dust off their feet, symbolizing their departure in contempt for their rejection. This act signifies leaving behind any negativity and moving forward to more receptive places.

Herod's Perplexity

In verse 7, we see Herod the Tetrarch, who hears about the miracles happening and is confused. Some say John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, while others speculate about Elijah or other prophets returning. It's important to clarify that this Herod—Herod Antipas—is not the same as Herod the Great, who ruled at Jesus’ birth. Understanding the nuances of these historical figures enriches our reading of the text.

The Feeding of the 5,000

Next, we encounter one of the most beloved stories in the Gospels—the feeding of the 5,000 (verses 10-17). After the disciples report back to Jesus, they withdraw to a quiet place. However, the crowds follow them. Jesus compassionately teaches and heals them throughout the day. When the disciples suggest sending the crowds away for food, Jesus challenges them, saying, "You give them something to eat." With just five loaves and two fish, Jesus multiplies the offering, feeding everyone until they are satisfied, with 12 basketfuls left over. This miracle illustrates the power of Jesus and the abundance of God's provision, emphasizing that even the smallest contributions can lead to significant outcomes. This miracle is the only one, outside of the resurrection, that is recorded in all four Gospel accounts.

Peter's Confession

As we continue to verse 18, Jesus asks his disciples who the crowds say he is. They respond with various predictions, but Peter boldly declares, "God's Messiah." Jesus acknowledges this revelation but instructs them not to share it widely yet. He then foretells his suffering, rejection, death, and resurrection. Jesus’ prediction of his own death (first in verse 21 and again later in Chapter 9) lays the groundwork for understanding the cost of discipleship.

The Cost of Discipleship

In verses 23-26, Jesus shares profound insights about what it means to follow him. He states, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me." This calls for self-denial and a shift away from worldly priorities, emphasizing that true life is found in losing oneself for Christ's sake. This concept can be challenging, but it underscores the transformative nature of following Jesus.

The Transfiguration

Moving along, we reach a climactic moment in verse 28—the Transfiguration. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain to pray. There, his appearance changes, and he speaks with Moses and Elijah. This moment signifies the fulfillment of the law (Moses) and the prophets (Elijah), highlighting Jesus’ role in their legacy. A voice from the cloud proclaims, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him." This divine affirmation confirms Jesus’ authority and mission.

About Me

Bible N3rd Pic.jpg

I started the fullness of my walk with Christ in 2019.  I can't believe how much it has changed my life and still how far I want to go.  I was never a "reader" but some chains fell off my life and I have spent so much of my time studying and learning.  It got to the point where I wanted to engage and share what I have made into a passion.  That is where this all started and I can't wait to see where God takes it!
